User Testing Project
Overview
In a team with two classmates and I, we conducted a user test of a game prototype, Bee-Catching Game, developed by University of Waterloo’s Johannes Kopf and Jana Franceska Funke. The objectives of our study were to observe how players learned and used the controls in the game, to diagnose issues with the game prototype, and to identify ways that could make the user experience more enjoyable.

Study Plan
We created a study plan that outlined our research objectives, session times, pre-session dialogue and consent, tasks, and interview questions. Each team member interviewed two participants (with six participants in total). There were no restrictions on the participant’s age or gender, however, we preferred half the participants to have more video game experience and the other half to have less video game experience (this condition was achieved). The method we used to carry out our research was through task-driven observation and interviews. After testing the game prototype at least once ourselves, we (the researchers) began the user testing process. Following the introduction to the study and consent of each participant, the researcher would ask the pre-interview questions and note the participant’s responses.
Findings
The key findings from our user test and interviews indicated key positives (polished user interface, good and consistent graphic style, quick feedback from controls, clear objective, fun sound effects) and key negatives (difficult “look function”, unclear controls, unclear in-game prompts, not challenging and complex enough, flaws in game design and sound) of the game prototype.
Report & Presentation
Our team analyzed the data, wrote up a user testing report (that included all the research elements), and recorded a user research debrief to present our findings and recommendations for the next steps in improving the game prototype.

D&D Story Design
Overview
I designed a one-hour role-playing experience using the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition basic rules. This includes the storyline, characters and a map. My game design was play-tested with three other classmates.
