Interrupted Reading

"Sometimes books are so intriguing that the reader immerses themselves into the story, as if they are actually in it, and this is somewhat an illustration of that"

— Christine Fong, Artist Statement

Overview

This GIF is a combination of multiple videos taken on a green screen. Adobe After Effects was used to substitute the green background with the backgrounds of my choice. The video was then edited in Adobe Photoshop, where I drew on each frame to create the 'doodle' effect. There, the frames were exported into a GIF.

The piece is an interpretation of Alison Knowles' Newspaper Event, where performers are to read a newspaper or book in different languages. In my adaptation of her event score, I am reading the same book, but discover myself in a different location each time I put the book down.

This ink on paper piece demonstrates the walk cycle animation technique. Using the character I designed, I sketched and used ink to draw multiple stages of the walk on animation paper over a light box to animate a full walking cycle.
